The Company’s History
The first Sirius> Smart Gallery was opened in August 1995 in Maastricht, and was one of the first shops of its kind in Holland and the whole world. Our first aim was to create a place where people could buy safe alternatives to all kinds of chemical drugs that are playing an ever-growing role in European youth culture.
But Sirius> had to be more than only a place where one could buy natural alternatives to chemical drugs. Sirius> Smart Gallery had to be a psychedelic meeting-point where people could hang out, have a smoke with other people, get information about all kinds of drugs and herbs, listen to (techno) music and be informed about what is going on in the techno scene. Moreover with our Sirius> Smart Galleries we wanted to offer a place for young, talented artists to exhibit their work.
Over the years Sirius> has grown to be one of the biggest companies in what people became to call the smart shop business. Now, Sirius has three Smart Galleries in the Netherlands (Maastricht, Roermond and Eindhoven) and Sirius> Smart Sounds (The Teknowledgystore), a Smart Shop and record shop for DJs and other techno-heads (also in Maastricht). Also we have developed our own product line and wholesale department, called Sirius> Products, through which we supply a lot of other Smart Shops worldwide.
From the start, underground dance music has played an important role within the Sirius> company. At first our party organization Hectic kicked off the techno scene in Maastricht, and more recently we gained much wider fame with our House of God events. The latest development are two record labels founded by Sirius> Smart Sounds.
