This bamboo tepi applicator is made entirely from natural bamboo, has a smooth finish, and is practical for everyday handling. The construction of this tepi is designed for use between two people, providing a stable grip and positioning the two ends for shared rapé administration. Bamboo also keeps the handmade tepi pipe remarkably lightweight, practical, and easy to take care of.
What is a bamboo tepi applicator, and what is it used for?
A tepi is an applicator for rapé, also referred to as hapé, an Amazonian ceremonial snuff traditionally used among a number of Indigenous peoples. A tepi applicator is traditionally used by one person to administer rapé to another, often in ceremonial settings. One person blows through it to deliver the rapé into the receiver’s nostril.
Many preparations of rapé contain finely powdered Nicotiana rustica, also known as mapacho, combined with alkaline plant or tree ashes and other botanical ingredients. If you would like to learn more about rapé, its history, ingredients, and use, read our blog about the differences between cigarettes and Rapé. Or maybe you would like to buy rapé itself? How to use and care for your rapé tepi applicator
Using a rapé tepi applicator requires two people, with one person administering the rapé and the other receiving it. In some ceremonial contexts, the receiver may also take a moment to set an intention for the ritual. Once you are ready, follow these steps:
- Load the rapé into the narrow nostril end of the tepi pipe.
- Position the receiver with their chin slightly lowered and mouth open for breathing.
- Place the tepi with the narrow end gently positioned at the entrance of the nostril.
- Administer the rapé with one steady, controlled blow through the tepi.
- Clean your tepi by removing any remaining powder with a small brush or clean cloth. If necessary, use lukewarm water and dry the tepi thoroughly before storing it in a dry place.
If desired, repeat the process for the other nostril. In some traditions, using both nostrils forms part of the ceremonial practice. Disclaimer: Use rapé with appropriate caution. Many rapé preparations contain nicotine from tobacco, which can increase heart rate and blood pressure and is addictive. Composition varies considerably between rapé products, and tobacco-containing preparations may also contain other harmful tobacco constituents. Avoid combining it with other substances and consult a medical professional before use, especially if you have health conditions or take medication.
