More about Copelandia Man in Black grow kit
Sirius presents the Copelandia mushroom grow kits, a collection of four cultivation lineages that underwent extensive selection in the Netherlands. The Man in Black spore print entered the collection of our specialist breeder and cultivator in the Netherlands in 2024 with “Man in Black / MIB” already written on it. The story behind the name and who created it are unknown to the breeder. In the breeder’s cultivation experience, MIB has shown exceptionally white fruiting bodies, a slender morphology, and a tendency to form very dense clusters. Inside this Copelandia MIB grow kit, you will find:
- 1 substrate tray containing the growing medium.
- 1 container of casing soil to spread loosely over the substrate before cultivation.
- 1 plastic grow bag used to maintain the humid environment needed during fruiting.
The separate casing layer means this Copelandia grow kit uses a different cultivation protocol from our Psilocybe cubensis Magic Mushroom Grow Kits.
How to use your Man in Black grow kit
Experience with Mushroom Grow Kits can help, but the MIB Copelandia grow kit has its own specific cultivation protocol. You will need a clean fine-mist spray bottle and clean tap water at room temperature:
- Unpack the kit: Take out the grow bag, substrate tray, and casing soil.
- Add the casing soil: Spread it evenly over the substrate without pressing it down.
- Set the humidity: Put the tray inside the bag and spray 20 to 30 times with a fine mist inside the bag, allowing moisture to settle on the inner walls and lightly on the surface. Do not repeatedly spray the same spot on the substrate.
- Close the bag: Fold the top, close it using a clip, and make sure you leave some air inside.
- Choose the right conditions: Keep the kit between 22 and 26°C in normal daylight, away from direct sunlight.
- Air and mist daily: Once or twice daily, open the bag for a couple of seconds and lightly squeeze the sides to refresh the air. Next, apply 1 to 2 fine mist sprays inside the bag. A light layer of condensation indicates that humidity is at the right level. Avoid overwatering.
- Wait for the first pins: They may appear after 5 to 11 days. Once they do, stop spraying but keep airing 1 to 2 times daily.
- Harvest: Harvest every mushroom, regardless of size, as soon as the caps open and before heavy spores are released. Gently tilt them sideways near the base until they come free.
- Start the next flush: Following harvest, apply about 20 fine mist sprays inside the bag, seal it back up, and continue with your regular daily care. A single tray can yield up to 4 to 5 flushes, though this cannot be guaranteed.

Story of the Man in Black lineage
In 2024, a spore print reached our specialist breeder and cultivator in the Netherlands with the name Man in Black / MIB already attached. The breeder doesn't know who came up with the name or the story behind it. In the breeder’s cultivation experience, MIB is anything but dark: it has shown exceptionally white fruiting bodies, a slender morphology, and a tendency to form very dense clusters.
Copelandia cyanescens or Panaeolus cyanescens?
Panaeolus cyanescens is the current scientific name, while Copelandia cyanescens is treated as a synonym and remains common terminology in mushroom cultivation. For this cultivation lineage, descriptive terms such as Panaeolus cyanescens MIB, Panaeolus cyanescens Man in Black, Man in Black Panaeolus, and Copelandia cyanescens MIB may also be used. Panaeolus cyanescens contains psilocybin and psilocin, the psychoactive compounds responsible for its psychedelic effects. Our special Dutch selection of Copelandia MIB
After germination and culture establishment, Copelandia MIB became part of the wider four-line Dutch selection programme, which involved hundreds of grow kits. Across successive generations, strong and distinctive expressions were selected while preserving what made each lineage unique.
For MIB, the breeder has observed exceptionally white fruiting bodies, a slender morphology, and very dense cluster formation. These are cultivation observations, so there is no guarantee that every harvest will look identical.
Man in Black vs Hawaii, Blue Spring Red Spore and Weza
The four Copelandia lineages were all part of the same broader Dutch selection programme, while each retained its own distinctive characteristics. At Sirius you can find:
- Man In Black (MIB), aka The White Mystery. In the breeder's experience, MIB produces exceptionally white fruiting bodies with a slender shape and tends to grow in dense clusters.
- Copelandia Hawaiian grow kit, aka The Powerhouse. In our breeder’s experience, it stands out for vigorous growth, impressive fruiting bodies, and dense clusters.
- Copelandia Blue Spring Red Spore grow kit (BSRS), aka The Colorful One. Reddish/orange spores and fruits, blue mycelial areas, and persistent, repeated fruiting in our breeder’s experience.
- Copelandia Weza grow kit, aka The Heavyweight. In our breeder’s experience, it has produced the thickest stems and flattest caps among the Copelandia/Panaeolus cultures he has worked with.
Four histories. Four expressions. One Dutch selection programme
Copelandia potency warning
Do not underestimate these mushrooms. They can be exceptionally potent, so the Copelandia Man in Black grow kit is intended only for highly experienced psychonauts. Analyses of P. Cyanescens show high concentrations of psilocybin and psilocin in certain specimens, though potency can vary widely between individual mushrooms and collections.
These quantities must never be treated as guarantees of safety. For a first experience with Copelandias, even for a highly experienced psychonaut, 0.5 g dried / 5 g fresh is the conservative upper guideline. For people with substantial experience specifically with Copelandias, 1 g dried / 10 g fresh remains the conservative upper guideline. Individual sensitivity, differences between harvests, set, setting, and other factors can all affect the experience.
