So, what is kief? Simply put, it is the collection of trichomes - the resin glands that coat the cannabis plant, particularly the buds. These trichomes contain most of the cannabinoids and terpenes that give cannabis its potency and distinct aroma. In other words, kief is a concentrated form of cannabis that packs a punch in terms of both effects and flavor. The word "kief" comes from the Arabic word "kayf," which means pleasure or intoxication, perfectly describing the strong effects it can induce.

It's important to understand kief, especially its potency, before you incorporate it into your routine as a cannabis user. This is only logical, as it is a very concentrated and pure form of weed. Kief THC levels can vary depending on the strain of cannabis it's derived from, but it typically contains between 50% to 80% THC, compared to the 15% to 30% found in most cannabis buds.

Typically, it is collected in grinders, and for those who switch between different strains, the kief weed that accumulates becomes a blend of various strains. This means that the kief you collect likely reflects an "average" of all the weed you’ve smoked, with different THC/CBD ratios and varying Indica/Sativa compositions. This mix can create a unique product, combining the effects of multiple strains into one smokable powder!

The higher THC concentration means that even a small amount of it can produce strong psychoactive effects, making it an excellent choice for cannabis connoisseurs looking for a more intense high. However, this potency also means that kief should be used with caution, especially by those with lower tolerance.

Kief side effects

Because it is so concentrated, it can induce side effects that are typical for a high dose of super-potent weed. The most common kief side effects include:

Kief and hash are both cannabis concentrates, but they differ in their potency and how they are made. It is collected by sifting trichomes from the cannabis plant, which automatically happens in a grinder with a kief sieve. How to make kief & use it
