Carene
Delta-3-carene is a bicyclic monoterpene with a sweet, pungent smell. It is naturally found in many healthy, beneficial essential oils, including cypress oil, juniper berry oil and other coniferous tree oils. In higher concentrations, delta-3-carene can suppress the central nervous system. It is often used to dry up excess body fluids such as tears, mucus and sweat.
It is non-toxic, but can cause irritation by inhalation. In some species, high concentrations of delta-3 carene may be partially responsible for coughing symptoms, itchy throat- and eye afflictions associated with cannabis smoking.
Delta-3-carene is also naturally present in pine extract, paprika, basil oil and citrus fruit oil from fruits such as grapefruit, lemons, lime, mandarins, clementines, oranges and kumquats.
Carene is an important component of turpentine and is used as a flavoring agent in many products.
