MAO (monoamine oxidase)
This is an enzyme that is produced by the body and that breaks down certain amines (toxins) and renders them harmless and ineffective. It also breaks down the monoamine neurotransmitters dopamine, nor-adrenaline and serotonin, keeping them at a normal level. The term MAO inhibitors refers to all substances that inhibit the activity of the MAO enzyme (see MAO inhibitors).
